About Me

Hi, my name is Andy Czerwonka. In my day-to-day life, I’m a father, husband and software technology professional that is passionate about helping solve sustainability problems. You can find out a little bit more about my professional career by visiting my LinkedIn profile.

I’m also an aspiring hobbyist street & documentary photographer. I choose this style of photography as I find myself drawn to art that tells a story. I’m most inspired by the works Saul Leiter, Fred Herzog, and Fan Ho. My intention with this blog is to create a space where I can share a bit of my own style, a style that I’m still trying to discover.

Photography Laws in Canada

Here in Canada (and in most other places I’ve visited), photographers are within their rights to take photographs in public places and publish them, including photographs of people, even without getting their consent.

Ethics in Street Photography

As a photographer, my intentions are simply to capture life as it happens. That means that if you’re in public, I might take your photo when you’re not expecting it. Even though I’m legally allowed to do so, I do practice my own set of ethical rules when capturing people in public.

  1. I will always try to respect your wishes. If I take your picture and you ask me to delete it, I most likely will.
  2. I will not publish identifying images of children as the main subject.
  3. I refrain from capturing identifying images of disadvantaged and/or vulnerable people without their consent. For those who have no choice but to be in public, consent to be observed is not implicit. They can’t revoke that consent because there’s nowhere else to go. The following photo is an example of what I try to accomplish in these situations.
